Windows Shopping


I was down the local supermarket yesterday when I saw some self-service checkouts being installed. I was surprised, and as a geek quite intrigued, to discover that they were running on Windows XP. Surprised in the sense that I would have thought some embedded OS might have been used instead. Not surprised that the way I had elicited this fact was because the machine hadn’t booted properly.

    I’ve often seen a bluescreen + stack dump displayed, sideways, in the portrait 50-inch ‘poster’ displays on the London Underground. Always some XP device driver or other….
